ASA, BBB, and the HPA…. Acronym soup and what it means for you.

ASA, BBB, and the HPA…. Acronym soup and what it means for you.

If you’ve ever fired a gun, you know just how loud it can be—and why hearing protection is essential. But for a growing number of American shooters, there's a smarter solution: suppressors. These misunderstood tools, often mischaracterized in movies and media, are at the center of a major advocacy movement led by the American Suppressor Association (ASA).

Founded in 2011, the ASA has become the nation's leading voice in the fight to protect and expand suppressor rights. What began as a coalition of manufacturers, dealers, and enthusiasts has evolved into a powerful nonprofit organization dedicated to educating the public, lobbying lawmakers, and pushing for commonsense reforms that benefit gun owners and the broader community alike. From legalizing suppressor hunting in dozens of states to championing federal legislation like the Hearing Protection Act (HPA), ASA’s mission is simple: make suppressors more accessible, better understood, and fully accepted across the United States.

A milestone came this summer with the passage and signing of President Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill (BBB) on July 4, 2025, also known simply as the Big Beautiful Bill. While full removal of suppressors from the National Firearms Act (NFA) didn’t survive Senate scrutiny, the final law eliminated the $200 tax for the issuance of a tax stamp, reducing it to $0 for suppressors, short-barreled rifles, shotguns, and AOWs, effective January 1, 2026. ASA praised the achievement as “the biggest blow to the National Firearms Act since its passage” and is now gearing up for a legal challenge to further dismantle the NFA.

If you thought waiting for your stamp to get approved was painful imaging seeing a horizon where $0 stamps are a reality, but you have to wait until January 1, 2026 for it to take effect. Fortunately, a number of key industry retailers have stepped up to lessen the burden in this transitionary time.
